Next up on the spotlight is Blue Boy Biscuits, your dog’s next favourite organic treat company. This small business is run out of Berwick, Nova Scotia by full time student and dog mom of two Blue Heelers, Alisha Balsor.

Balsor launched Blue Boy Biscuits in August 2020 originally out of her parents’ meat market. As many people were purchasing meat for their dogs, it seemed like the perfect place to start. When in season, all ingredients are locally sourced right down to the packaging. Balsor recently created her first website using Squarespace after spending the first few months on Etsy. All updates and product stock lists can be found on their Instagram, @blueboybiscuits and website, http://blueboybiscuits.com.

Name: Alisha Balsor

Name of Business & Location: Blue Boy Biscuits, Berwick, Nova Scotia

LN: How do you manage the local ingredients in your products?

BBB: For example, we don’t have local strawberries all year round, so when we have those local strawberries I’ll make something with strawberries but when those strawberries go away, that treat also has to go away. That’s what keeps it local and I think people are very happy about that… and I like to try new things because I am a trained chef at the end of the day!

LN: Who inspired you to start your Blue Boy Biscuits?

BBB: My mom suggested that I start selling them at their meat market because they had people picking up meat for their dogs there. So that’s how it started! I went on to social media I think two months after I started selling there.

LN: What online programs do you use?

BBB: My website is on Squarespace. This is my first website so originally started on Etsy then quickly moved to Squarespace after two months. We’ll see if I stick with that, but it’s pretty good so far!

LN: Where do you source your packaging?

BBB: So they are all compostable with a clear window so you can see in them. Everything is Canadian! So it’s a little more expensive but it’s a local product.

LN: What is your best selling product?

BBB: Moonmist trainers have been at the top! I have an icecream line right now for summer… then always Best Bud which is a CBD medicated dog treat which has been my top seller for almost a year now.

LN: What have you learned from owning a small business?

BBB: Nothing in this world is cheap unless someone is being exploited somewhere along the way. This is something that I’ve noticed a lot in my life as a woman with a trade but especially now with business and wholesale buying… if something is cheap and too good to be true, someone is not being treated fairly.

LN: Exactly. How do you maintain a work-life balance as a full time student?

BBB: You need to set realistic goals for yourself so you don’t feel discouraged. A nice little section of your home that you can work in but then close the door and then walk away from has been a huge help for me.

LN: Do you have a fun fact about your business?

BBB: Blue Boy Biscuits the “BBB” acronym is actually for the three dogs, Blue, my mom’s dog and then Bentley and Basil which are my two dogs. So I don’t know, we just stuck with the B’s we’re going to have to stick with the “B” names for the rest of my life I think!
